Instagram Demographics May Surprise You

Instagram's new logo and app icon

Do you need to reach young educated urban black women? Try Instagram.

In a 2014 survey of adult Internet users, Instagram revealed somewhat surprising demographic trends.

Instagram reaches young women. Women use Instagram more than men, however the gap is closing. Instagram is used by 29% of all women and 22% of all men.

Not surprisingly, it's extremely popular with people under 30. Among the 18 to 29 age group, it was used by 53% of all Internet users.

Although, the fastest growing group are people over 65, which grew from 1% of Internet users to 6%. It makes sense because this is also the group transitioning to smart phones at the highest rate. Instagram was a "mobile first" design.

Educationally, the highest percentage (31%) of Internet users have "some college", however it's nearly as popular with high school graduates and college graduates.

One of the most interesting statistics was that adult minorities are far more likely to use Instagram than whites. Instagram is used by 38% of black adults and 34% of Hispanic adults, compared with only 21% of white, non-Hispanic, adults. The growth rate was highest among Hispanic adults, increasing nearly 50% between 2013 and 2014.

Among urban Internet users, 28% use Instagram compared with 19% of rural Internet users.

So if your target demographic is black women between 18 and 29 with at least some college and living in urban areas, Instagram is a great media option.

Creating a popular Instagram profile takes time, but is free. Alternately, you can place paid advertisements directly on Instagram through the Facebook advertising platform. After it was purchased by Facebook, Facebook integrated Instagram as an option for their advertisers.
